Can Gandhivad (Gandhism) Work in Democratic India????

Mahatma Gandhiji – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2nd October 1869 to 30th January 1948) - A name that needs no introduction.  Father of Nation - Gandhiji's Ideology has spread all over the world.

To begin with I salute to Gandhiji. It is a wrong attempt on my part to write anything related to the Respectable Personality.

“Nature Can Fulfill Man’s Need But Not Man’s Greed. Even Violence By The Tongue Is Wrong. Follow Total Non-Violence To Beat Violence.” – Mahatama Gandhiji.

Gandhiji’s Six Principles :
1) Satya - Truth
2) Ahimsa - Non-Violence
3) Vegetarianism
4) Brahmacharya – Celibacy
5) Simplicity : Not keeping more than one’s need
6) Faith
7) Swaraj – Freedom

Gandhiji’s most popular philosophy of three monkeys-
1.Speak No Evil            2. See No Evil           3. Listen No Evil

“Hatred can be overcome only by love.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Practicing Gandhism needs the desire to sacrifice and take challenges boldly. Immense patience and tolerance is required to practice Gandhivad. It takes time but it works. Mass Movements can create havocs history has proved this to us. One needs to be self-confident but calm and needs tireless – consistent efforts towards goal. One needs to be self – confident enough to fight the battle alone for which it requires to have surety that you are true and right. I personally don’t believe that we need to give our other cheek when we are slapped on one but we can definitely hold on a non-violent approach & it is not essential to be aggressive with the attacker (Hard to Practice by us with the immense reactive attitude of ours in this stressful lifestyle of ours).

“The moment the slave resolves that he will no longer be a slave, his fetters fall. He frees himself and shows the way to others. Freedom and slavery are mental states.”- Mahatma Gandhi

I unquote, “ It’s just one person who can make that difference. You can’t change things overnight. But that one person who can stand up and make that difference will make a mark and it has proved”, as quoted by Ms. Priya Dutt, MP, Mumbai, after Sanjay Dutt’s role as Munnabhai was successful.

“The sacrifice which causes sorrow to the doer of the sacrifice is no sacrifice. Real sacrifice lightens the mind of the doer and gives him a sense of peace and joy. The Buddha gave up the pleasures of life because they had become painful to him.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Can Gandhism work in democratic India? Democratic India where majority wins over minority. But, from the present scenario of Shri Anna Hazareji’s action against Lokpal Bill, the increasing support by Indians to Him, especially younger generation, makes it clear that if everyone follows Gandhivad, Gandhism can work. In today’s life people hardly have time, people are living their life keeping aside their conscience at many times, there is a shift in family values, number of nuclear families are increasing and selfishness to a large extent is seen in individual`s transactions. But this movement has shown us that Indians need a revolution and this is a paradigm shift from Dadagiri to Gandhigiri. Transit period always exist. Just saw a news channel questioning - 'Is fast until death emotional blackmailing?' - How do we today's Indians rate this question?  Annaji's voice against corruption needs a salute. But can corruption really be thrown out of our Country. It's a deadly virus. But Sharaddha & Saburi - Let's hope that we see a corrupt-free India, though little late. But someday will we see it??  And even after it is achieved, how long and how much will it be effective and consistent? Will this viscous circle really come to an end or it will continue behind the curtains ? - Million dollar questions.

My father just narrated to me about a nationwide impactive social revolution progrma Sampoorna Kranti (Total Revolution) more well known as J P Movement launched by Shri Jayprakash Narayanji (Loknayak) in 1974 against the controlling rule of Congress then led by Lt. Smt. Indira Gandhi. Definitely this movement had its separate indentity and importance and I dare not compare it with the present one.

Our country once again needs Gandhiji today. Gandhism was against Britshers and the mockery is that we have to practice it even after 63 years of freedom against our own countrymen. Whatever modernization occurs, few Ideology don’t change is what will be proved by Shri Anna Hazareji, on his success in his movement related to Lokpal Bill. Annaji has taken one step and millions Indians need to walk on that!!!!!!! People need to come out on streets the way they did when India won the World Cup last week- that was out of joy and this one would be out for a revolution - A mass movement is essential.  Jagoo India Jagoo!!

“We must become the change we want to see in the world.”- Mahatma Gandhi
